Samuel Bankman-Fried, often known by his initials, was born in the United States on March 6, 1992. He is an investor, entrepreneur, and the founder and former CEO of the cryptocurrency exchanges FTX and FTX.US as well as the quantitative cryptocurrency trading company Alameda Research. Late in 2022, a crisis at FTX caused the native cryptocurrency of FTX, FTT, to crash. Bankman-Fried resigned as CEO of FTX during the crisis and declared he would wind down operations at Alameda Research. FTX then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Bankman-Fried participated in Canada/USA Mathcamp, a summer school for gifted mathematicians. In Hillsborough, California, he graduated from Crystal Springs Uplands School for high school. Bankman-Fried studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2014. He resided in Epsilon Theta, a coeducational group home there. He received his bachelor’s in physics and his minor in mathematics in 2014.
