Jura Koncius takes questions about covering home and design at The Post

Publish date: 2024-08-20

So this is part two of my goodbye. After more than 47 years at The Washington Post, I have decided to turn in my badge on Dec. 31. I told my editors last summer that, although I still love my job, it is time to move on to my next act. I’ve hosted this Thursday chat for almost 20 years and it’s been so much fun to spend an hour with all of you each week as designers, organizing experts and tastemakers — plus pest control experts and plumbers — have answered questions about how to live better at home. I am going to really miss this part of my job. I do plan to freelance from time to time.

My career has taken me all over the world writing about beautiful homes and covering design fairs. Some of my most popular articles were about decluttering and organizing, such as Stuff it: Millennials nix their parents’ treasures and Americans are pack rats. Swedes have the solution: ‘Death cleaning.’ I have also covered five administrations’ worth of interiors and holiday decorations at the White House.

These chats have been informative and sometimes hilarious. This one with Jonathan Adler included a drop-dead answer about a maroon and gray kitchen. And of course there was Martha Stewart’s chat on the holidays, including why she would never give a candle as a hostess gift and how she gets stains out of her linen napkins.

For this final chat, I will answer questions about anything you want: White House holiday lore, Marie Kondo’s worst nightmare, what not to put in your garbage disposal, how to get your guest room ready for the holidays, how Heloise dries her nails.

Please post your questions here today. I’m looking forward to chatting with you; my Thursdays will never be the same.

Submit questions below. The box now allows you to upload a photo of your home. Please note that any photo you upload will be subject to The Washington Post’s Submission Guidelines, including certifying that you have the right to post the photo. If you have suggestions for live chat topics, please email me at jura.koncius@washpost.com.
