David Carr deletes tweet about brother Derek after Henry Ruggs crash

In the wake of news that star Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III is facing DUI charges after a fatal collision early Tuesday morning in Las Vegas, David Carr, the former NFL quarterback and older brother of Raiders signal caller Derek Carr, sent an ill-timed tweet hyping up his younger brother as the prospective NFL MVP.

“When the Raiders make the Super Bowl this year, I will argue, successfully I might add that not only is Derek the MVP, I will make the case that there has NEVER been a more valuable player,” the deleted tweet read.

Many were quick to point out the timing and lack of empathy from his tweet, considering someone died in a car accident.

The elder Carr, who works for NFL Network, swiftly deleted the tweet and walked back his words, issuing an apology.

“I’ll try this again, my apologies if the last tweet sounded incentive (sic), I just can’t imagine another team having to deal with so much off the field,” the tweet read. “It obviously hits a little too close to home for a brother.”

David Carr, 42, was the first overall pick of the then-expansion Houston Texans in the 2002 NFL Draft. After five years as the primary starter in Houston, he stuck around as a backup with the Panthers, Giants, and 49ers.

The Raiders, who currently sit atop the AFC West with a 5-2 record, have had a tumultuous season. Head coach Jon Gruden resigned in October after insensitive emails to former Washington Football Team executive Bruce Allen were leaked to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.

Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia was named interim head coach after Gruden’s resignation, and the Raiders have notched wins over the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles since then.
